Taroona to fight tooth and nail against league champions as relegation looms

Bottom-side Taroona and second-last Olympia Warriors continue their battle against relegation this weekend and both sides face tough encounters in the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League competition.

Taroona face the daunting task of meeting league champions South Hobart away at South Hobart on Sunday, while Olympia may have a slightly easier task away against third-last Kingborough Lions United at Lightwood Park on Saturday.

The Reserves & Under 19 Have An Important Weekend Ahead

This weekend is extremely important for Team South's Under 19's and Reserve Players who are playing at home against Taroona FC this Sunday so that makes it an important weekend for the entire Club.

Both teams are sitting top of their respective tables and the Club couldn't be prouder of the fine effort our boys and coaches have put in all year. Three cheers to all the players for demonstrating talent, teamwork, committment, determination and the ability to play the beautiful game every week.

You may wonder why this weekend is so important - Wins for both teams will basically "seal the deal" on being crowned trophy winners for their division! Do I need to point out that if the boys win South Hobart Football Club in our hundredth year will be Champions for all three Senior Leagues - Truly awesome indeed.

Taswegians bedevil Mariners - Jon Price

John Price writes about the Tasmanian -v- Central Coast Mariners  via his website www.stattoz.com.au

Central Coast Mariners defeated Tasmania 3-0, but couldn’t score until the 76th minute. The goals were scored by Matt Simon, Oliver Bozanic and Adam Kwasnik.

The match was played at KGV park, the Football Federation Tasmania headquarters, on Tuesday 27 July 2010  on a warmer than average July evening  in front of 3000 spectators.

The reason I’ve estimated 3000 is because of the number of fans who found their way into the venue without paying.

Pertinently, as a Tasmanian, I knew the Mariners far better from seeing them play on TV, than the Tasmanian players.

It was an interesting match. The Mariners lined up as a 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond. Tasmania started the first half with a 4-3-3, but they struggled to hold their shape in the first half. This made it difficult to decipher their shape. After the half time interval, Tasmania went to a 4-2-3-1, which at times looked like a 4-5-1.

Tasmania vs Central Coast Mariners Highlights

Tasmania's plucky performance limits Mariners to three late goals

Tasmania 0

Central Coast Mariners 3 (Simon 76, Bozanic 80, Kwasnik 90+2)

Tasmania: Pitchford (Kruijver 46) - Pennicott, Iseli, W Abbott, Scott - B Eaves (Roach 46), Marchioli - Brennan (Lo 46), Mann (D Brown 46), Kanakaris - McKenna (Hamlett 60)

It was like being in Europe again, where football is king. The KGV Park pitch was looking like a football pitch should, and the crowd was excellent. To see spectators all around the perimeter of the pitch and up on the hill at the Glenorchy end of the ground was heart-warming to say the least. Perhaps the official attendance figure was too low, but it certainly matched those of Sunderland’s visit to KGV Park in 1976, and that of the Socceroos at the same venue in the early 1980s.

It was a good night for Tasmanian football. Our team was not disgraced and, with a little more composure inside the box, might even have embarrassed the visitors. Imagine what longer preparation and a few other inclusions may have done.

We certainly lacked the technique of the Mariners, and their passing was crisper and more accurate. But there are other factors to the game and Tasmania lacked nothing in terms of commitment and desire. Tasmania were not overawed and they could hold their heads high at the end. For 76 minutes the home side kept the visitors scoreless, both through good play and good fortune.
